WHAM is pleased to announce that Rabbi Rashi Simon will be joining us for this year's Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services.
Rabbi Simon is the Executive Director of Kesher, one of the most vibrant educational organisations in Anglo-Jewry today. Having also established the Jewish Learning Exchange in 1989, Rabbi Simon has been at the forefront of Jewish outreach for nearly 10 years. WHAM is proud and excited to have secured his involvement in our High Holyday services this year.
More details of our Yomim Noraim services will follow in the next issue of WHAM '98.
In the last issue of WHAM '98, we reported the birth of Yehudit Charin.
Thank you to those of you who were kind enough to point out that Yehudit was not born on 9 July - this date was several days after the date of publication.
Yehudit was, in fact, born on 9 June. Please amend your diaries accordingly. Apologies, and mazel tov once again, to Sally and Geoffrey.
In the last issue of WHAM '98, we indicated that a new, more inclusive, mechitzah configuration was to be installed in the Beit HaMedrash.
WHAM regulars will have noticed that there have, as yet, been no changes. Rest assured, however, that the plan has not been abandoned. We promise that a new mechitzah will be coming to a Beit HaMedrash near you very soon.
One lapsed WHAM tradition, which we hope to resurrect, is the sedra synopsis at the start of each week's leining. This is another way for those who might not otherwise get involved in the service still to play a role. No prior knowledge is required to give a synopsis, which simply consists of a one or two minute summary of the sedra without any additional commentary. If you would like to help to enhance the service by giving a synopsis, please get in touch with Louise Sylvester.
In the last edition of WHAM '98, we published the first WHAM "10 for 10" rota.
The response to our appeal has been very pleasing, with three of the four rota weeks now full, (see table below). We would like to thank all of our members who have attended in recent weeks and, as a reminder, ask that you note your times once more and please be sure to be prompt given the service start of 9:45am.
To everyone else: please consider volunteering to fill the fourth week, as a prompt minyan will enable us to strengthen the character of our service, with more singing, guest speakers and breakfasts.
Also, even if it isn't your rota week, you will always be welcome from 9:45am onwards!
If you are interested in joining "10 for 10", please speak to Robert Shaw, (e-mail rshaw@wham.org.uk), or Mike Davis, (e-mail mdavis@wham.org.uk).

One of the most appealing aspects of WHAM is that its services are run by its members. We are keen to ensure that this does not become too great a burden on a small number of individuals, so:
Children's services happen every Shabbat at 11:00am and are a joint WHAM / Main Shul endeavour. The service for children of 4 yrs old and under takes place in the Nursery downstairs, and one for children aged 6+ is held in one of the classrooms upstairs. 5-year-olds have a free choice! At 11:45am, everyone gets together in the Nursery for a children's kiddush.
Everyone is very welcome: children to come, adults to have a go at taking a service if they would like to; we offer training and lots of help.
If there is a celebration in your family, you can sponsor a children's kiddush at a cost of £5, and if it is a child's birthday we will all sing Happy Birthday!
For further information about the children's services, please speak to Louise Sylvester.
WHAM holds a Shabbat morning service every week in the Beit HaMedrash, commencing at 9:45am.
Other regular services are held by The Hampstead Synagogue, as follows:
Kabbalat Shabbat | 7:30pm (summer months) |
Sunday morning | 8:30am |
Mon/Thurs morning | 7:30am |
Rosh Chodesh morning | 7:15am |
As in previous years, we are hoping to organise a summer cricket match and picnic. WHAM will be challenging another local London shul to a cricket match and a picnic will be laid on for all players and supporters.
At the time of going to press, the date and venue had not yet been fixed. Please listen to announcements at shul for further details, or alternatively speak to any member of the committee.
WHAM has relaunched the traditional Shabbat morning breakfasts each Shabbat Mevorachim HaChodesh. The next breakfast, which will take place during a break in the service before the leining, is scheduled for 22 August.
The annual Choral Selichot service, one of the centrepieces of The Hampstead Synagogue's calendar, will be taking place on the night of Saturday 12 September / Sunday 13 September.
The precise start time was not available at the time of going to press [midnight with refreshments from 11.15pm]. Please listen out to announcements in shul for further details.

Editor's Note: Under the 30 week rule, diaries of a member of last year's WHAM Committee have now been made public. The following is an extract from a week in September 1997. The background to it is that this committee member was, whilst at University in the early 80s, the tutorial partner of William Hague MP, the Leader of the Opposition.
Met my old mucker Hague today. Reasonably dignified congrats on his ascendancy despite obvious past differences of view. Chuffed with my own magnanimity. Funny how he still nibbles his upper lip when he's under threat. How odd things turn out! We are just the same age and were once at exactly the same stage in life. Now I am one of only 12 people who effectively run WHAM and he hasn't got a look in. Told him what I felt I could about arguments re: wearing dinner jackets on Kol Nidre. On farewell couldn't resist teasing him with (though I say it myself) superb parting shot saying that I reckoned I had the ear of one or two key people in the main shul too e.g. HG and that my eventual elevation to the Main Shul Board was "not something that I am presently prepared to rule out completely". By this time his top lip was spurting blood. Poor chap. Plainly consumed with envy.
Hague called to suggest that I seek to outwit opposition by saying that I am personally against DJ's on KN but that I am only supporting the call for them to appease middle ground. Also suggests calling openly for referendum. No wonder Hague has fallen so far behind me in life's achievements and in particular in marshalling of power. The Anti DJ'-ers are much too smart. Decided not to tell Hague that anyway I was only picking the DJ issue as an extreme position so that the final "compromise" is a deal which allows me to sit in box right in front of Aron Kodesh and then mitzvah men have to come and shake my hand after.
Hague rang me (after appearance of three stars) to ask how it went today at shul. Such a fool! He thinks I don't realise that he is trying to wheedle his way into WHAM power structure. He now talks openly of conversion, WHAM aufruf (which I accept is a good move) and Ffion running for Main Shul Ladies Guild. Clever! I offer gentle encouragement but keep my thoughts to myself. He is still young in terms of experience - if not in looks or age - and I'm not persuaded that he is yet ready for the cut and thrust of WHAM politics. Of course he envies my position of influence which reflects the extent of my achievements since our days in College but I do think that he will have to conceal it better than that if he wants to get ahead in life.
Grease 18cm square cake tin, (a round tin or loaf tin will also do).
Finely grate carrots.
Whisk eggs and sugar until thick and creamy.
Whisk in oil slowly, add remaining ingredients and mix all together.
Place in tin and bake in oven at 190C, 375F or Gas Mark 5 for 20-25 mins or until firm to touch and golden.
Dust with icing sugar when cool.
