As you will all be aware (and if you aren't then you weren't utilising your fridge magnets), the WHAM AGM took place last month and a new committee is now chosen - if not yet quite in place!
The Committee (in alphabetical order):
Jean-Marc Barsam | Gabbbai | Geoffrey Charin | Hampstead/Newsletter |
Caroline Christie | Catering |
Charles Coleman | Events/Marketing |
Lucy Coleman | New Members/Events |
Clarissa Coleman | Friday Nights |
Nick Cosgrove | Chairman/New Members |
Steven Mendel | Treasurer |
Jonathan Seitler | Marketing/New Members |
David Sinclair | Sedra Synopsis/Security |
Annabel Sinclair-Horne | Family Events |
Whilst many will say that this is a fair-sized committee - if your name doesn't appear above, do please be prepared to help if asked to do so and together WHAM will continue to go from strength to strength.
One of the truly "Alternative" aspects of WHAM is the participatory nature of the Shabbat morning services. Many people have felt able to take their first tentative steps in leading a service, calling people up, reading the Haphtarah or reading from the Torah, in an atmosphere of encouragement and understanding.
This is something that we would all like to see continuing and there are a few members who have indicated that they are willing to teach davening and lehning to those wishing to give it a try. And of course, the more people taking part the less of a burden it will be on those already there!
If anyone is interested, please contact any member of the committee and they will put you in touch with a teacher.
Of course, given the religious affiliation of WHAM, the word "people" used above really means, let's face up to it, "men". However, this committee will be looking into ways to increase the participation of women in WHAM and will welcome any suggestions in this area too.
It was not only the WHAM Committee that changed recently: Changes at Hampstead have been literally across the Board with three new Honorary Officers (out of three). They are:
Henry Grunwald and Michael Haringman - Wardens, and Bruce Lewin - Financial Representative.
On behalf of WHAM, the committee wishes them every success in their new positions and looks forward to working with them to the greater benefit of the whole community. Our relationship with Hampstead in the past has had its ups and downs, but recent conversations with their new team leads us to hope that the downs will now be very much in the past and WHAM intends to contribute to this spirit of co-operation.
Since the last newsletter, the average age of WHAM members has again been slashed with the arrival of two very tiny young men.
Greetings to them and congratulations - to Anthony & Ruth Warrens who begat Richard - and to Charles and Lucy Coleman, whose son's name is yet to be announced.
The WHAM mailing list now reaches well over 100 households. If you would like to put a notice in this section of the Newsletter (it's free!) - contact Geoff Charin

A RUDE WINE HOG
Last month’s AnagWHAM ("Her nanny saw rot") was correctly guessed as Anthony Warrens - well done Sarah Patchick! This month’s could come to Kiddush but wouldn’t be strictly Kosher.....

There are one or two things that WHAM does not do well. The concept of a "10am start time" for example is a difficult one for Whamees to grasp. Hitherto, the malaise was restricted to shul of a shabbat morning but by last Sunday (15th June) it had spread to Regent's Park.
WHAM had been challenged to a cricket match by Marble Arch, and at 10am things were looking grim for the Home Team. Of course we needn't have worried - by 10:30 we had our cricketing minyan and battle was joined. Captain Tony Metzer had begged and scraped and cobbled a team together and now, interviewed at the start of the game he hoped we would not give too embarrassing an account of ourselves.
The first twenty minutes did not bode well: 15 for 3. It was then that Simon Rocker stepped up to the crease - and scored 72 not out! Aided most notably by Charles Daniels who scored 30 runs, WHAM lasted the 20 overs with room to spare - 126 for 5.
So we could daven and we could bat but with only 40 minutes remaining and Marble Arch playing for a draw, could we bowl? In a word - Yes: Again Simon was our star performer, taking four wickets, followed by Lionel-last-to-arrive-Davis who took three. When their last man was caught, WHAM had scored a double victory - Marble Arch all out for 72, but also a successful event, well-supported, with more women than even on a shabbat morning!

On Sunday 10th May, there was a well-attended Israel Independence Day evening at the home of Rabbi Michael and Sara Harris. It was nice to see a mix of WHAM members with members of Hampstead. There was lots of felafel and a sing-a-long with entertainer Jess Gold.
Also at the Rabbi's was the Tikkun Leil which commenced at 10:30pm First Night Shavuot. First to speak was the Chief Rabbi of South Africa, Cyril Harris, followed by Andrew White and then by Rabbi Michael Harris. Again, attendance was good with many lasting the whole course until shacharit which began at just before 3am. Thank you to the speakers, Michael and Sarah and also to Jean-Marc who catered for the event practically single-handed.
Julians's father, Maurice, passed away two weeks ago.
Here are two areas where anyone and everyone can participate and do their bit for WHAM. Neither is very time consuming or onerous.
If you have never put your name down for either in the past, please think about doing so this year. - Help out those who continue to do their bit.
If you DO get a call from David Sinclair..... surprise him!
