Here at last is the thing you've been waiting for; the Shavuot edition of the WHAM newsletter, WHAM News -The Alternative:, under the auspices of a new editor.
In the rush to get this out in time for Shavuot, this newsletter may be thinner than usual, but at least we are doing our bit for the environment.
Thanks to everyone who contributed at short notice to this newsletter, with particular thanks to Andrew Hougie, Aviva Goldschmidt, Geoffrey Zelin and many others.
As you may notice we are missing our usual contribution from Rabbi Harris. Unfortunately at the time of going to Press, Rabbi Harris had just had his appendix out. I'm sure you will join me in wishing him a speedy recovery.
If you're reading this and are inspired into writing any articles, recipes or anything else which you think would liven up this newsletter, then please send them to me at the address on the back and hopefully we will have something that won't slip in between other magazines.
I would also like to feature peoples' particular hobbies or daily work routine. If you would be willing to put yourself (or someone else) forward for scrutiny by the masses, please let me know.
Anyway enough from me. Onward
I am writing this article on behalf of my co-chairman, Andrew Hougie and myself, and, as I do not proclaim to be a writer, will try to keep it short so as not to bore you.
As I phoned Paul Jacobus, my predecessor, last night to ask him for help in promoting our Minyan, I thought of the role reversal which was taking place. Many an evening would the phone ring and Paul would be on the other end trying to persuade me to come to one of WHAM's unique dos. Though I confess he was not always successful in his powers of pursuasion, the events I attended were never a disappointment.
I think that to say last year's committee did well is an understatement. Their hard work and commitment are a hard act to follow. But we hope that we will be as successful as they were and thank them for all their efforts.
We have a number of ideas which we hope to implement over our year in office and will seek to increase our numbers and to invite some outstanding speakers for our shabbat meals. Though we have our own thoughts on this subject, any suggestions or requests would be gratefully accepted.
I said I would keep it short, so I will end here. And next time I phone Paul Jacobus to persuade him to come to an event, I hope he will be even more eager to come than I was when our roles were reversed.

The WHAM site on the INTERNET's World Wide Web (WWW) went live in March and is now available to anyone with access to the Internet at URL:http://www.wham.org.uk/. In the press release announcing the launch, we said:
"West Hampstead Alternative Minyan (WHAM) this week became the first synagogue in the UK to launch a site on the Internet's World Wide Web. The site offers details of all WHAM's activities and services, as well as links to other Israel and Jewish sites around the world.
This entry into cyberspace by WHAM, the alternative Minyan based at Hampstead Synagogue, builds on WHAM's reputation for bringing innovation to the traditional United Synagogue service."
The WHAM web site includes the full text of the most recent newsletter to members, as well as other information about WHAM and its activities.
The WHAM pages are held on a "virtual server". This means that while they appear as an independent web location with their own separate address, in fact they are part of a larger site on an external computer system. WHAM is only responsible for maintaining its pages and does not have the added responsibility of maintaining the server, its software or its internet connection. The initial setup costs were funded by an anonymous donor.
As part of WHAM's internet presence, WHAM can now be contacted by Email (at webmaster@wham.org.uk) and we also operate an Email newsletter with information from time to time. If you would like to be on the Email mailing list, please let us have your Email address.
